Loyola : 10 years on

Image

It was hard to believe initially. A decade has gone by. Around Mar-Apr in 2003, I was completing my ISC board exams (damn didn’t knew they were fixed) and saying goodbye to my alma mater.

I was chatting with my brother (who is also a Loyolite) and he updated me on the latest LaFest news. The new dance group called LOSB (Loyola One Step Bunch) is pretty kickass and I recommend you check out their Youtube videos.

Things went on as normal until now. I was taking my mandatory Sunday siesta and started dreaming. Like a cycle without brakes my mind started wandering. It finally settled upon this serene moment which defined my childhood.

Cardboard cricket

I have no clue why that happened considering nowadays I am not a cricket fan and rarely watch matches. If I were to ask Loyolites what would be one of their happiest moments in school life I think the top picks would be the following :

  • LaFest
  • 11th Standard School Day play
  • Excursions (Goa/Bangalore)

Agreed, they are all in my top 10 list.

But after waking up from my sleep I felt that the Cardboard cricket days were the happiest days in my school life. It summed up all the camaraderie, innocence and love of a life-time.

What on the earth is Cardboard Cricket ?

This story goes back to my 3rd standard I think. We used to have two final exams in a day. The second one used to get over by around 2 pm and we had a complete one hour of free-time until the school bus starts for home. This is the time for Cardboard Cricket. So without further ado let me explain the specifications.

Bat : Writing board used for exams

Ball : An intricate composition of a pebble at the core with meticulously wrapped paper rolls held together by multiple rubber bands.

Pitch : The gap between two trees on the elevated area behind the goal post.

A motley gang of around 10 used to rush to the spot after exams and the two captains would decide the team and off we were to that magic land.

Nothing else really mattered for us during that one hour.

For me that is the picture perfect moment I want to treasure throughout my life.

Even though majority of guys used to play football during that time, around 10 of us preferred this game.

From what I think we used to play until 5th or 6th standard when we upgraded to actual cricket bats and tennis ball.

Bonus Read :

I was always curious about where folks went to cram in between the two exams. Some preferred the football steps and used to have an occasional match in between. Some preferred the assembly steps. (Damn those were hot). Some empty classrooms or even the library. I think I was always a nomad. I never chose the same place every year, but sort of finally settled on the steps on the farther side of the main building towards the end.

What is your favourite memory or incident from school days?.
